This wise figure, emblematic of the Taoist tradition, holds in his right hand the tablets of the law, symbols of wisdom, justice, or celestial doctrine.
  
  The serene face, the finely sculpted beard, and the folds of the garment bear witness to delicate and refined work, typical of 19th century Déhua porcelain.
