Magnificent antique Japanese decorative panel dating from the late Meiji period, around 1900.

This piece features a superb raised embroidery depicting an iconic scene from Japanese legend featuring two historical figures: the warrior-monk Musashibō Benkei and the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune, also known as Ushiwakamaru.
A historical and legendary subject
The scene depicts the famous encounter between Benkei and Yoshitsune on the Gojō Bridge in Kyoto. According to legend, Benkei, a formidable warrior-monk, attempted to seize the young Yoshitsune's sword but was defeated by his agility. Impressed by his abilities, he subsequently became his loyal companion.

Beautiful quality embroidery
The scenery is created using embroidery with matte and twisted cotton threads, worked in relief to give volume to the characters and the various elements of the scene.
The embroidered fabric is mounted on a panel of traditional Japanese washi paper, ensuring the rigidity of the whole.
The antique colours, the details of the costumes and the meticulous work of the threads testify to a particularly interesting Japanese decorative know-how.

The panel is presented in its original frame made of genuine bamboo, which underlines its Asian character and authenticity.
