  This superb traditional Chinese 2-compartment basket, dating from the early 20th century, is a fine example of Asian folk craftsmanship.
  
  Made entirely of woven bamboo, this octagonal basket with lid and handle was historically used in Chinese homes as a shopping basket, bento box or for ceremonial purposes.
  
  Its elegance lies as much in its form as in its details:
  • Two superimposed compartments (functional and aesthetic)
  • A finely carved handle decorated with a black grouse accompanied by a chrysanthemum flower – symbols of vigilance, endurance and beauty in Chinese culture
  • Neat braiding in geometric patterns (openwork on the upper compartment, chevrons on the bottom)
  • Assemblies reinforced with bamboo strips and rivets
